INTERNATIONAL TRAFFIC AND INFRASTRUCTURAL NEEDS
This publication is based on a report on trends in international traffic and infrastructural needs discussed at the Lausanne Session (May 1986) of the Council of Ministers of the ECMT (European Conference of Ministers of Transport). The report was developed from data on various scenarios obtained from a questionnaire survey on international forecasts. The statistical bases for the different scenarios, and the summary of the questionnaire responses are appended. This study examines the probable consequences of growth of traffic by 4 percent per annum and emphasizes the potential problems arising in such a scenario with regard to the transport infrastructure. The study shows that whatever the modal split in the year 2000, infrastructural capacity will be inadequate to cope with international goods traffic growing at a rate of 4 percent per annum. Other scenarios also have shown that bottlenecks will occur in the land transport infrastructure in Europe. It is therefore necessary to find solutions to cope with the unavoidable bottlenecks in the transport infrastructure.
