URBAN TRAFFIC CONGESTION: WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD? GETTING AROUND TOWN: STRATEGIES FOR URBAN MOBILITY

This report provides a concise explanation of transportation alternatives and reviews their pros and cons. The changing transportation needs of Americans is examined and the attempts of several American cities to alleviate their traffic problems is documented. Guidelines are offered that give basic principles which will help community leaders make decisions about their area's transportation strategy. The costs and benefits of different transportation alternatives are compared. It is noted that large scale rail transit systems, although technological successes, have been economic disappointments. This realization has confirmed the belief that good urban freeway systems, carrying buses, vans, and automobiles, offer the most promising solution to chronic traffic congestion.
