USE OF THE FINITE ELEMENT METHOD IN PAVEMENT DESIGN. A COMPARISON BETWEEN TWO MODELS
ANVAENDNING AV FINIT ELEMENTMETOD VID DIMENSIONERING AV VAEGKROPP. EN JAEMFOERELSE MELLAN TVAA DATORMODELLER
In order to decide if the finite element program "EPAFEM" is useful in pavement design comparisons were made with the accepted program "BISAR". Eight pavement models were compared. The models were designed to show if the calculation methods have different sensitivity as to variations in modulus of elasticity, lateral contraction and layer thickness. The equivalence was good regarding strains. As to vertical displacements a difference of 0 to 10 per cent was observed. The results indicate that the difference probably is a consequence of differences in the calculations of materials with low modulus of elasticity.
