FURTHER WORK ON THE CONTROL OF FATIGUE CRACK GROWTH. FINAL CONTRACT REPORT

Earlier work has shown that a considerable improvement in the fatigue life of cracked specimens with holes drilled at the crack tips could be obtained either by inserting a high strength friction grip bolt in the hole or by expanding the hole radially by the Boeing split sleeve cold expansion process. In this new work tests have been carried out to examine the possible use of the Boeing process to treat cracks subjected to alternating loading and cracks situated at the toes of transverse fillet welds. Tests have also been carried out, using both processes, on specimens with cracks loaded in bending and also to investigate the influence of crack length and behaviour under variable amplitude loading. In all these situations considerable improvements in life were obtained, but high strength friction grip bolts appeared to be more beneficial than the Boeing process. However, the tests under variable amplitude loading showed that the presence of a "static" tensile stress could considerably reduce the benefit, particularly in the case of the boeing method.
