THE PROTOTYPE TESTING OF INNOVATIVE BRIDGE DETAILS: THREE RECENT CASE HISTORIES

While the Road Construction Authority prepared the design and tender documents for the South Melbourne section of the West Gate Freeway which included nearly 80,000 square metres of elevated roadway and used match cast segmental box girders erected by balanced cantilever construction from launching girders, several of the design details were investigated. The case studies selected for this paper are: (a) concrete piles cast under (i) water, (ii) bentonite slurry; (b) concrete cast to full scale prototype box girder segment dimensions; and (c) transmission length in grout-bonded post tensioning cables, i.e., load transfer without the use of end plates.
