BOREHOLE INVESTIGATIONS IN ROCK: EVALUATION OF THE RELIABILITY OF METHODS
Without exception, some kind of report concerning rock conditions forms the basis for the projecting work in an underground rock excavation operation. Such reports, which may take a great variety of forms, are in turn based on information about the rock and the rock mass obtained by different investigation methods. The character and the reliability of this information is of decisive importance for the results, since it is this information which, in one way or another, will form the basis for rock mechanical analyses, calculations and evaluations during the design stage, as well as for rock mechanical and practical considerations of the contractor during the bidding stage. The comparative investigations and analyses of existing borehole data which were reported in the Swedish Building Research report R34:1973 have been augmented in this investigation by means of field tests in order to define the capacity of the various investigation methods to provide information, and the degree of reliability of the information provided. Five investigation methods - core drilling, percussive investigation drilling, a method for integral sampling, TV examination of boreholes and water pressure testing - have been studied in the field with this object. In the report the reliability of the information communicated by the various methods is evaluated and it is discussed schematically the costs entailed in using these investigation methods. The result should facilitate an optimization of the investigation activity for each individual project within the framework of costs which is in force. /Author/
