NATIONAL COMMISSION AGAINST DRUNK DRIVING. PROGRESS REPORT ON RECOMMENDATIONS PROPOSED BY THE PRESIDENTIAL COMMISSION ON DRUNK DRIVING

This progress report gives encouraging statistics but also indicates that the campaign against drunk driving is far from over. The report emphasizes that health prevention more than intervention has only just begun. A chart is given which presents a check list of selected DUI (driving under the influence) countermeasures. The chart represents responses of state officials to survey questions. Statistics are also provided on fatal crashes in 1982-1985, and intoxicated drivers involved in fatal crashes and their age groups. States that tested and reported blood alcohol concentration results on at least 70% of driver fatalities are noted. The report considers recidivism, arrests and penalties, and awareness and education. Industries that are advocates for safety and have supported safety programs are noted. Systems and intervention such as deterrents, legislation and programs are briefly discussed.
