NEW TECHNIQUE USED IN SCHEVENINGEU BREAKWATER CONSTRUCTION
Silting of ports and damaging wave action are ever present problems throughout most of the world. To help lessen this problem breakwaters are built off many ports. The design of a breakwater is very critical due to the large forces exerted by waves and currents formed by them. Many different concrete forms are being tried in an effort to find one that will provide protection, ease of maintenance, and durability. One concrete block form produced by J. Stolk and Sons, called the stolk Cube, is provided with internal passages connecting the opposite faces of the block. It is anticipated that this construction will decrease amount of stress produced by falling water masses, absorb the horizontally directed force of the waves, decrease return flow force, reduce the quantity of waves washing over the breakwater, reduce maintenance costs, and absorb fast moving currents. Seven foot cubes with cylindrical passages of one to two feet in diameter are now being tested on a section of breakwater at Scheveningeu. The Stolk Cubes cost more than normal cubes, but it is felt that the reduced maintenance costs will counter this. The author feels a full scale trial of the Stolk Cube construction is necessary since generally accepted theoretical methods do not describe this construction adequately.
