COMPACTION OF EXPANDED CLAY AND OVERLYING SUBBASE MATERIAL

Tests made to find whether subbase can be satisfactorily compacted on a fill of expanded clay gave the following results: (1) This can be done. Compaction is at least as good as when the subbase is compacted on clay or other fill. It is essential that expanded clay be properly compacted and spread and compacted carefully. The subbase must not be tipped. Lightweight machinery must be used, no heavy vibratory plant or rollers. (2) Compaction of expanded clay in thin layers with a lightweight vibrating plate gives better results and less crushing. Subbase can also be compacted with the same plate. This method is particularly suitable in confined spaces. (3) A filtersheet on the expanded clay stabilises this and facilitates spreading and compaction of subbase. It prevents mixing of expanded clay and subbase. It is recommended that expanded clay be spread by lightweight tracked loader in 1 m layers and compacted in four passes with this loader. Track pressure should be 0.03-0.05 mpa. Side supports should be up to the level of the fill before compaction begins. Subbase should be spread in two layers and compacted in six passes. In confined spaces, expanded clay can be placed with an excavator bucket. (TRRL)
