PRODUCTION DESIGN AND ECONOMICAL TECHNIQUES FOR HEAVY MACHINE WELDED STRUCTURES
To reduce the cost of welded structures it is necessary to effect production control and production design by utilizing the latest achievements in the science of management (such as industrial engineering, value analysis, quality control, zero defects, and process control). It is also necessary to make investments in plant and equipment on the basis of long-term plans and to renovate plant facilities for improving daily operations. Discussed in this paper are some of the economic aspects of welded structures actually manufactured by Hitachi, Ltd., Japan's representative manufacturer of heavy electric equipment. The examples cited here are concerned with the improvement in effective welding designs and the development of automated and specialized welding procedures in connection with steel-plate welded structures for hydraulic and thermal power equipment.
