INTER URBAN COMMUTING TRAFFIC. DEVELOPMENT IN TIME AND COMPOSITION
INTERSTEDELIJKE WOON- WERK VERPLAATSINGEN. ONTWIKKELING IN DE TIJD EN SAMENSTELLING
In physical planning the concept of urban regions has a central place. Attention is concentrated on the urban region as a spatial expression of daily life. The aim of the policy of urbanization is to situate new living and working elements inside these urban regions. However, little is known about the commuting traffic between these urban regions. Therefore a study was made which had a twofold purpose: (1) to give an idea of commuting traffic inside such urban regions in time and place, and (2) to study the composition of the flows with respect to sex, age, education and profession of the commuters, the journey time and the transport mode. Seventeen of such urban regions in the southern and western part of the Netherlands are studied and the results are presented. (TRRL)
