TRANSFER WAITING TIMES IN PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Transfer waiting time is an important factor in the quality of public transport systems. This study provides formulae to calculate the average transfer waiting time under different circumstnaces. Such calculations and additional simulations show the need of coordinated frequencies of public transport lines and the sensitivenesss to small punctuality deviations. Off-set times between the scheduled times of arrival and departure have, in the case of small deviations, a positive effect on the reduction of transfer waiting times. The off-set time should be related to the magnitude of the punctuality deviations. Dynamic control of the times of departure decrease the transfer waiting time considerably. A combination of small off-sets and, if necessary, small postponements of the times of departure is most efficient. For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 286523.
