MODAL CHOICE IN THE CAIRO-ALEXANDRIA CORRIDOR
DE VERVOERWIJZEKEUZE IN DE CORRIDOR CAIRO-ALEXANDRIE
The paper deals with the analysis of modal choice in the corridor Cairo-Alexandria in Egypt. A survey has been carried out among passengers leaving Cairo at the terminals of trains, buses and intercity taxis. The results show a major influence of income on modal choice. Higher incomes prefer the more expensive, faster and more comfortable modes. Both speed and cost/km increase systematically with income, and the "value of time" can easily be derived. The Egyptian experience is the inspiration for some suggestions for the organization of public transport in the Netherlands. For the covering abstract of the conference see TRIS 453956. (Author/TRRL)
