THE USE OF A DIRECT BUS WITH HIGH FREQUENCY, CONNECTING WITH TRAINS, BY CHOICE-TRAVELLERS IN THE REGIONAL JOURNEY TO WORK
HET GEBRUIK VAN EEN HOOG FREQUENTE DIRECTE BUS, ALS AANSLUITING OP DE TREIN, IN HET INTERLOCALE WOON-WERKVERKEER DOOR KEUZEREIZIGERS
For the home to work trip the choice-traveller mostly chooses the train (70 -95%) when his work is within a short walking distance from a railway station (and when the train is a realistic alternative). Good local public transport expands the area of train preference significantly: up to 2 km from the central station the Rotterdam metro does not show a loss of choice-passengers. Bus 36 in The Hague (every 5 min in the peak) also has a train-stimulating function, although it appears to be significantly less attractive than a metro: average walking distances are 1 km longer, the bus has no role within 1500 m from the station, the percentage of train-choosers at that point is 80% of that near the station, at 2 km 75% and at 3 km 50%.
