BICYCLE PLANNING IN AUSTRALIA. CHAPTER 16. THE ENCOURAGEMENT OF CYCLING

The range of activities employed by the Geelong bike plan over the five year life of the plan is wide. A variety of events, happenings and productions were developed to try to encourage people to ride bicycles and to do so in a safe and enjoyable manner. This chapter is a pictorial record of the Geelong bike plan encouragement program. It ranges from the official launching of Geelong as "Cycle City", the production of technical bulletins on a variety of topics of relevance to bicycle planning, and details of bike week and of Austrailia's first national conference on bicycle planning, through to a series of photographs of the blue ribbon event in Australian cycling -the Sun Tour. Safety aspects such as bicycle flags and examples of posters entered in the children's week competition are featured. The formation of bicycle clubs in Geelong, resulting from the initiatives taken by the bike plan, are highlighted by shots of club members and bmx riders on club outings. There are photgraphs of participants in the family "bicycle "discovery ride" and of the Geelong-Otway century bike tour. For the rocrd of the covering entry for the book, see TRIS no 452283. (TRRL)
