BICYCLE PLANNING IN AUSTRALIA. CHAPTER 12. BICYCLE EDUCATION PROGRAMS FOR JUNIORS

This chapter discusses the need for comprehensive bicycle safety education programs, their development, format and implementation. School-based teaching of bicycle education enables informed teachers to present material appropriate to the learning capabilities of children, with authority, in a program that has continuity. The Road Safety and Traffic Authority of Victoria has sponsored the development of two bicycle education programs -roadswork and bike ed. The bike ed course, designed for the over 9 year olds, is described in detail in this chapter, together with the in- training program for teachers, which is one component of the overall implementation strategy for the course. The geelong bike plan has developed "Young Children and Bikes: A Short Learning Course for Parents". This course has been trialled in Geelong and Shepparton and will be adopted by the road safety and traffic authority for statewide implementation. The course was developed to provide parents of children in the 5-9 year age-group with strategies for developing and supervising the cycling behaviour of their young children. The roles of other supporing agencies usch as the Victorian Education Department, the Victoria Police and the Geelong bike plan are also highlighted.
