IMPACT ATTENUATORS: A NATIONAL SURVEY - PART I

Motorists are protected from bridge abutments, sign supports, and guardrail ends by concrete median barriers, breakaway-cable-terminal guardrail end treatments, and the impact attenuator or crash cushion. Impact attenuators come in many styles. Some are plastic drums filled with sand or water. Others consist of crushable foam cartridges surrounded by guardrail. Another is a frangible steel tube network. Some models use aluminum cans as the impact absorption medium. To learn more about the use and maintenance of impact attenuators in this country, a survey was made of the 50 state highway departments plus several toll road authorities.
