RESEARCH NEEDS RELATED TO SIGN LUMINANCE AND VISUAL COMPLEXITY OF HIGHWAY SIGNS
Recent research on sign luminance and conspicuity are described and it is noted that conspicuity is a construct which relates measures of perceptual performance with measures of background, motivation and driver uncertainity. Few studies have examined the effects of the visual complexity of nighttime highway environments on driver requirements for sign size and luminance. It is noted that research is needed to scale visual complexity. Research is also needed on the sign position and its effect on the luminance available at the driver's eye level.
