VACUUM BLASTING
The Virginia Department of Highways and Transportation conducted a demonstration project to evaluate equipment for vacuum blasting structural steel. The equipment was developed by the Inventive Machine Corporation, Bolivar, OH. The demonstration showed that vacuum blasting can be used easily on girder bridges. It effectively controls and collects blasting debris without discharge in the environment. The blasting removes paint, rust, and millscale, and imparts a surface profile into the steel.
