FHWA COATINGS RESEARCH PROGRAM
This article gives an overview of how highway research is performed and funded, and of the coatings research program. It explains the various elements that form the research program and highlights individual research studies. Among those studies discussed are the Highway Planning and Research (HPR) program, the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP), the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) contract program, and FHWA Staff Research. These are the four elements of the Federally Coordinated Program (FCP) involving federally supported highway research, development, and technology. In l977 corrosion protection of steel structures was added to the list of FCP projects. For this project, FHWA efforts focus on evaluating coatings and developing test methods and criteria for performance characteristics.
