TRANSPORT IMPACTS OF PUBLIC HOUSING DEVELOPMENTS IN KUWAIT

The framework of a computer-oriented urban growth and change model formulated to assess the transport impacts of public housing developments in Kuwait is presented. The model is applied using the period 1980-90 as an example. The proposed framework incorporates sub-models for housing stock, household allocation, and gravity type expressions for school and work trips interactions. Expected end of period travel demands are allocated to a comprehensive computer-coded urban road network utilising an equilibrium traffic assignment technique. The use of the model in the assessment of transport impacts of possible public housing development strategies indicates that all available development options will lead to generated traffic demands far exceeding the expected capacity of major transport corridors. The option of new town developments is judged to be the only sound alternative. (Author/TRRL)
