A PROPOSAL FOR THE DESCRIPTION OF ROCK MASSES
UNA PROPOSTA PER LA DESCRIZIONE DEGLI AMMASSI ROCCIOSI
This article briefly reviews the "basic geotechnical description of rock masses" (bgd) proposed by the International Society for Rock Mechanics in 1980. Certain considerations deriving from the application of bgd in the field, are discussed. In particular the five parameters on which the bgd is based are examined: the rock name, with brief geological description; the thickness of the strata (where the term is taken in its widest sense); the fracture intercept; the monoaxial resistance to compression of the material; and the angle of friction of the fracture.
