KINGSTON PARK METRO

The development of the community of Kingston Park to the North West of Newcastle is described. Served since 1800 by waggonways, a passenger line was not opened in the area until 1905 and this closed again in 1929 when the expected development failed to materialise. With the completion of coal extraction in the area residential development was undertaken and the potential for a rapid transit system identified. The existing freight line was transformed into the metroline and decisions regarding the location of stations are discussed. The development of Kingston Park station, due to open in July 1985, was a result of finding some unused money within the metro budget cost limits. Details are given of the development of bus services in the area with particular reference to their integration with the metro system. (TRRL)
