PROVISIONS FOR THE (VISUALLY) HANDICAPPED IN GOUDA, THE NETHERLANDS

This paper describes an experiment carried out in the city of Apeldoorn in 1982. A path covered with rubber tiles connected the railway station and the bus station so that blind and people with impaired vision could change transport mode easily. Three other measures to help handicapped people are also described: 1) the making of a film "Samen of weg" (accessible roads for all) showing four handicapped people and the problems they encounter in everyday life; 2) first issue of a manual for traffic engineers containing an inventory of all possible infrastructure provisions for handicapped people; 3) demonstration project in the town of Gouda, where a complete network of routes is being devised for handicapped people. For the covering abstract of the seminar see TRIS 456275.
