COMPUTER-AIDED OPTIMAL WHEEL PROFILE DESIGN FOR RAIL VEHICLES

Wheel-rail geometry parameters strongly affect the dynamic performance of rail vehicles through their influence on the interaction forces between the wheel and the rail. Dynamic performance of rail vehicles can be significantly improved through the use of scientific methods for wheel design. With the development of ever faster, more powerful mini and micro computers, computer-aided design (CAD) methods can be effectively used to design wheel profiles using representative non-linear models. A computer-aided design method, implemented on a mini computer, has been developed at Clemson University for designing wheel profiles. This procedure uses an optimizing process to design wheel profiles. This procedure uses an optimizing process to design wheel profiles that meet the performance specifications of a given vehicle. Studies conducted to the present time show the CAD process to be quite effective and efficient.
