ASSESSMENT OF BRITTLE FRACTURE IN STEEL STRUCTURES
A multiplicity of tests has been devised to determine the brittle fracture susceptibility of a steel or, as it is commonly put, to determine the transition temperature above which it is hoped that brittle fracture would not take place in a structure in service and below which brittle fracture would be a likely probability. It is believed the proposed criterion provides a rational method of determining whether or not a particular structural element is susceptible to brittle fracture in service and would allow an accurate assessment of the brittle fracture susceptibility to be made. It is realized that each structure would have to be assessed individually. This is however the procedure that has had to be adopted with respect to fatigue failures where the fatigue characteristics of different structural details are determined experimentally and individually.
