RESEARCH DIRECTION IN TRAVEL DEMAND ANALYSIS
Because of the wide applicability of choice modeling techniques, Horowitz's paper implies that this research could be expected to yield benefits extending far beyond the transportation community. This paper builds upon a number of issues raised in the Horowitz's review and makes several additional observations. The problem of data inadequacy is examined in the second section. Lack of data is seen not only as an impediment to further progress on techniques for choice modeling but also as a restriction on the exploration of new hypotheses about travel behaviour. It is argued that a carefully-conceived data collection effort is a neccessary prerequisite to progress in travel demand theory. For paper by Horowitz see IRRD 287445.
