NEW JERSEY'S COAST LINE ELECTRIFIES

The North Jersey Coast Line, one of New Jersey Transit's commuter railroad routes, is undergoing the second phase of a $225 million electrification and modernization program. Phase I extended catenary 5 miles from South Amboy to Matawan and involved also track and bridge rehabilitation, station and grade crossing improvements, yard upgrading and new signaling and communications. Phase II will extend this work an additional 16 miles from Matawan to Long Branch. Primary objective of the entire program has been creation of a system that could shorten trip time while improving safety, flexibility and reliability of train operations. Already ridership is up 32 percent on the reequipped line from Matawan. Trip time from Long Branch to New York City is expected to be cut from 79 to 64 minutes. The project has involved a combination of UMTA and state funding.
