THE VOLUNTEER DRIVER IN SPECIALIZED TRANSPORTATION: RECRUITING A NEW CLASS OF VOLUNTEERS
The lack of empirical research on the characteristics of volunteer drivers in specialized transportation may prompt individuals interested in volunteer recruitment to seek guidance from the general literature on volunteers and volunteerism. The author cautions restraint in such action arguing: (1) that the profile of the "typical" volunteer, a cornerstone of the general literature on volunteers and volunteerism, is of questionable validity when applied to specialized transportation; and, (2) that the volunteer driver in specialized transportation may have a unique profile. To support this contention, a literature review and the results of a study of volunteer drivers and other volunteers serving in an agency in Maricopa County, Arizona are presented. Finally, the paper posits the existence of a "social orientation" variable that may affect recruitment of volunteer drivers.
