OPTIMUM SHAFT ALIGNMENT OF SUPER OCEAN CARRIERS
Acquisition and operational costs attendant on failures in propulsion shaft systems have accentuated the importance of the alignment plan adopted on super carriers. A brief statement of the alignment problem is first given and this is followed by a short review of its history. The economic significance of shaft alignment is next considered in the light of operational failures of components in the propulsion train. The concept of optimum alignment is then discussed from the viewpoints of selection and implementation. Economic and technical considerations needed in a computerized formulation of the problem are then presented. Using current design and operational experience, the paper concludes with a projection of the role of alignment the design of propulsion shaft systems for ships up to one-million tons deadweight.
