STRENGTH PROBLEMS/DESIGN LOADS IN VLCC CONSTRUCTION
The longitudinal strength is analyzed, observing that shipbuilders obviously need the classification requirements to select the ship's main dimensions and to optimize the cost and weight of the ship's girder. The use of probabilistic methods to determine wave bending moments by means of transfer functions, sea spectra and sea states distribution is discussed. Regarding transverse scantling the methods currently employed by Bureau Veritas for direct calculation of structures of very large carriers are outlined and illustrated. Considerations are also given to some particular strength problems which are likely to be encountered in these carriers of tomorrow.
