SOME HIGH CAPACITY BUS LANES IN LATIN AMERICAN CITIES: THEIR RELEVANCE IN TIMES OF ECONOMIC DIFFICULTY
The options available to transport planners in Latin American cities are being increasingly restricted by the financial austerity imposed by the economic problems of the region. To attend to demand for transportation in corridors of high demand in the larger cities, rail-based systems are viewed in a considerably different light than they were even a few years ago, due to high construction costs and operating deficits. In Latin America, variants of high capacity bus lanes have been developed, which have the ability to postpone the date when it is necessary to invest in rail based systems, or, in some cases, to avoid the need for the latter completely in the foreseeable future. On some bus lanes along which ply buses ordered by area of destination of route, it has been found possible in practice to carry up to 20000 passengers per direction per hour at a speed of approximately 19 kilometres per hour, including stops.
