BLAMP - AN INTERACTIVE BUS LANE MODEL
The paper describes the development of BLAMP (bus lane algorithmic modelling program), a computer program designed to analyse the practical effect of a bus lane and hence to assess the benefits obtained from the installation of such traffic management schemes. The aim was to simulate interactively the build up of any queues associated with a bus lane and to output bus and car delays, so that maximum benefit could be obtained from future installations. This involved taking account of the reduced capacity of the initial merge and the capacity of the reduced traffic lanes, handling a varying flow over the peak period and modelling the interaction of the traffic signals and the queues. The program is written in BASIC and run on a BBC microcomputer. A visual moving output is displayed in colour on a VDU which aids and simplifies both explanations and presentations of bus lane proposals and their effects.
