CROWSNEST TRAIL - RAILWAY RELOCATION, LETHBRIDGE, ALBERTA
The objectives of this project are: 1. Reinforce the commitment of the City to a strong central core. 2. Provide a suitable east-west alignment for Provincial Hwy #3 through the City. 3. Improve north-south transportation links within the City. 4. Provide suitable land for development. 5. Remove an unsitely physical and psychological barrier (C.P. marshalling yards) from the City. This project is unique in that: it is the first time a major relocation of marshalling yards has taken place in Alberta; it required extensive negotiations and compromise by three partners involved (The City of Lethbridge, The Province of Alberta and C.P. Rail); it required relocation of 400,000 cu m of material from an abandoned landfill, it moved approximately 2 million cu m of earth and generated a 1 million cu m surplus, it involved construction of major grade separation structures on previously undermined areas, it constructed a major expressway through the heart of an existing city and did not relocate one residence, and relocated only six existing businesses.
