ILLINOIS' TOUGH NEW DWI (DRIVING WHILE INTOXICATED) LAW
As of January 1, 1982, changes in the Illinois Vehicle Code make the arrest and prosecution of drinking and drug-impaired drivers much easier. The widely heralded DWI, or implied consent amendment of the 1981 session of the Illinois Legislature puts the means to remove drinking and drug-impaired drivers from highways and streets in the hands of the police and the courts, something that the old law made it practically impossible to do. Further discussion in this article centers on the following areas: pressure for the new law; difficulties with the old law; scope of the DWI problem; major changes in the law; and the future outlook.
