A CONTRIBUTION TO THE STUDY OF THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES
CONTRIBUCION AL ESTUDIO DE LAS CARACTERISTICAS MECANICAS DE LAS MEZCLAS BITUMINOSAS
This paper, which is the continuation of some previous work, deals with the following subjects: A) Difference between plastic and viscous bodies and between plastic and viscous strengths in asphaltic mixtures; B) Mathematical formulation of shear strength; and C) Influence of deformation velocity on plastic strength. The main conclusions drawn are: A) The strength of a bituminous mixture can be expressed as a function of the following parameters: 1) The shear and tensile strengths: 2) The lateral restraint; 3) The mean value of all tangents of the angles formed by the breakage surface in shear with the plane of action of the shear stress; 4) The viscosity coefficient of the asphalt; 5) The rate of deformation; 6) The duration of deformation; and 7) The thickness of the asphalt layer. B) The velocity of deformation has a similar influence on the plastic strength than on the viscous strength, and C) For paving bituminous mixtures under normal use conditions, viscous resistance to deformation has very little importance compared to that of plastic resistance (which depends mainly on the cohesion given by the binder). /TRRL/
