MARINE USE OF INDUSTRIAL GAS TURBINES

Because of their high flexibility of arrangements, compact high powers, and dual fuel capability, gas turbines are particularly well suited for the propulsion of container ships, LNG carriers and small cruise ships. Designs for the following types are examined--a container ship with waste heat from the gas turbine used in a small steam turbine, an LNG carrier using the boil-off as fuel and a helper steam turbine, an automobile ferry, and a cruise ship with a combined steam and gas turbine plant. Comparative costs for a diesel or a gas turbine plant for a 150,000 dwt tanker are given.
