DEFLECTIONS OF REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAMS

A simple procedure for the calculation of deflections of reinforced concrete beams is presented. In this procedure, the short-term deflection is estimated assuming elastic behaviour and using Branson's formula for the effective second moment of area i(sub ef). However, it is proposed that i (sub ef) calculated by Branson's formula should be limited to 0.6i(sub g) rather than i(sub g) for beams with a(sub st)/bd less than or equal to 0.005 in order to account for the loss of bending stiffness in such cases due to the tensile stresses produced by shrinkage and temperature changes. The long-term deflections due to creep and shrinkage are calculated separately by means of simple expressions. These expressions are based on the results given by rigorous calculation methods developed previously by Warner and Gilbert. (Author/TRRL)
