INFLUENCING TRAFFIC BEHAVIOUR: METHODS AND MODELS

Influencing traffic behaviour is aimed at the limiting of the behavioural possibilities of the road user. The first limiting factor is the legislation which prescribes mandatorily how or how not to behave in specific situations. In addition, infrastructural provisions such as road humps and traffic management schemes are limiting factors. There are also legal limiting factors like the wearing of safety belts, crash helmets, specifications for the vehicle and the road. However the uncertain factor in traffic remains the human being. The road user must have the knowledge and the comprehension to take adequate decisions for safe traffic behaviour in all kinds of traffic situations. Therefore he needs an adequate traffic education and his behaviour should be influenced in such a way that he really applies his experience and skill in such situations. Models should be developed to help the road user become a rational and cognitive functioning human being. (TRRL)
