BIOASSAYS INDICATIVE OF SOME SUBLETHAL EFFECTS OF OIL POLLUTION

A study of the effects of various aromatic hydrocarbon compounds on the response of the crabs to the "feeding stimulus" demonstrated that the monoaromatics act as anesthetics while naphthalenes and alkylnaphthalenes produce persistent inhibition. Naphthalene at 1 ppb was effective in producing persistent inhibition. Our recent observations have shifted to a study of the effects of naphthalene on the activity of the gill cilia of the oyster, Crassostrea virginica. These studies have demonstrated that naphthalene at 1 ppm apparently has an "irritant" activity on these cilia, accelerating the cilia that sweep mucous across the surface of the gills and decreasing the activity of the cilia that pump water through the gills. We are developing this system into a bioassay technique for hydrocarbon pollution.
