AN OPTIMIZATION TECHNIQUE FOR THE DESIGN OF A CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM FOR AUTOMOBILES
A computational method of optimization was used to design the control system of a continuously variable transmission (CVT) car, in which there are some nonlinear and unstable components. The engine with an optimum operating line (OOL) is an unstable element in general. The system, including a CVT and the unstable engine, was stabilized and designed successfully using an optimization technique with quadratic cost functions. The final designed parameters (system gains) of the CVT control system should ensure good stability and controllability, and consequently drivability in the system over the operating range. Compared with the trial-and-error method it is shown that the optimization technique for designing a highly non-linear CVT system can significantly reduce the time for system design and gives the optimal result about which one is concerned.
