EVOLUTION OF THE STATE OF COMPACTION OF A BITUMINOUS MIXTURE UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF TRAFFIC
THIS ARTICLE DESCRIBES THE STUDY OF THE BEHAVIOUR OF A BITUMINOUS MIXTURE IN AN EXPERIMENTAL SECTION AFTER COMPACTION UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF TRAFFIC OVER THREE SUCCESSIVE YEARS. THE DENSITY (AND THEREFORE THE STATE OF COMPACTION) WAS MEASURED BY MEANS OF THE GAMMA RAY ABSORPTION METHOD. THE PROCEDURE ADOPTED FACILITATED THE STUDY OF VARIATIONS IN COMPACTION AS A FUNCTION OF THE DEPTH OF THE CORE SAMPLE IN THE PAVEMENT. THE LARGE NUMBER OF MEASUREMENTS TAKEN ENABLED THE DATA TO BE STATISTICALLY PROCESSED. THE FACTORS TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT ARE: AGE, THE NATURE OF THE BITUMEN, POSITION OF THE CORE SAMPLE IN THE TRANSVERSE PROFILE OF THE PAVEMENT, DEPTH OF THE CORE AND STRUCTURE. RESULTS SHOWED THAT THE COMPACTION OF THE BITUMINOUS MIXTURE INCREASED BY 2.5% IN THREE YEARS, THAT THESE INCREASES TEND TO OCCUR DURING THE SUMMER, AND THAT VARIATIONS IN THE STATE OF COMPACTION DO NOT DEPEND ON DEPTH. BECAUSE OF THE NON-DESTRUCTIVE NATURE OF THE TESTS, THE SAMPLES CAN BE USED FOR OTHER INVESTIGATIONS. /TRRL/
