CROSS LANE DIVERSION/WINDSOR BRIDGE IMPROVEMENT, SALFORD

The Cross lane diversion/Windsor Bridge improvement scheme was constructed by Greater Manchester Council between February 1981 and December 1982. The scheme, located on the A6 Broad Street/Cross Lane in Salford, included the improvement of part of the A6, and a new dual carriageway connection between the A6 and M602 extension which was under construction concurrently. The scheme featured a degree of grade separation, giving improved access to Salford University. The construction of the new Windsor Bridge featured the use of weather-resistant, high-yield, steel plate girders to carry the A6 across the main Manchester to Preston railway line. Considerable work in advance of the main contract works was done to deal with service diversions. The scheme involved carrying out large-scale construction works in an intensely urban environment.
