CTA MAINTENANCE: BATTLING TIME, AGE, TRACK VARIETY
Chicago Transit authority is confronted with rehabilitation of track and stuctures that have been built at various times over the past 90 years and represent a combination of surface, elevated and subway rights of way. CTA also operates round-the-clock rapid transit service which complicates the removal of trackage from service for maintenance. While older track structures may offer some convenience in reconstruction, some designs tend to be noiser than new concepts. While CTA thus considers new types of construction when rebuilding track, future maintenance must also be considered. Although it is committed to continuous welded rail on surface and subway lines, it has so far generally used jointed track on the old elevated structures. Various facts of the maintenance planning and work are described.
