VEHICLE SPEEDS AND HEADWAYS AT NORTHERN END OF M1

The study described showed that the mean speed of passenger cars on the northbound carriageway was 51mph the 85 percentile speed was 58mph. For goods vehicles the mean and 85 percentile speeds were 43 and 51mph respectively. On the southbound carriageway the mean and 85 percentile speeds for cars was 58 and 66mph, and for goods vehicles 52 and 60mph respectively. Eight percent of cars and 2% of commercial vehicles equalled or exceeded 70mph on the southbound carriageway. On the northbound carriageway less than 1% of cars and no commercial vehicles exceeded 70mph. The proportion of commercial vehicles, including vans was 46% on the northbound carriageway and 59% on the southbound carriageway. Only a small percentage of drivers travelled at headways of less than 2 seconds in the slow lane.
