EFFECT OF ROAD CROSS-SECTION ON VEHICLE LATERAL PLACEMENT
The paper includes a brief literature review and then describes a survey of vehicle lateral placement on Australian highways. The survey was carried out on 11 sites in Victoria and six sites in Queensland. These sites represented a range of shoulder types, shoulder widths, lane widths and delineation treatments. Data collection was carried out using treadle detectors and the ARRB VDDAS equipment. No difference was found in the lateral placements data from the two states. The study found that the main factors affecting lateral placements at the sites were shoulder type and lane width. It was found that increasing lane width from 3.2 m to 3.7 m or sealing of shoulders caused a shift in lateral position of 0.15 m away from the centre line. The effect of unsealed shoulder width was examined but was unclear and was seen to deserve further research. No effect of edgelines on daytime lateral placement could be detected. There was a significant variation in lateral placement between meeting and non-meeting vehicles (a). (TRRL)
