FOLLOW-UP STUDY: THE "BIKE-ED" BICYCLE EDUCATION COURSE
A trial of "bike-ed", a Victorian bicycle education programme for students aged 9-13 years, was conducted in the Hunter region of New South Wales in 1981. This trial was promoted as part of the Newcastle bikepan, a pilot programme for bicycle planning in New South Wales. A follow-up study to the initial trial was conducted in August, 1982. The study sample for the follow-up survey consisted of seven schools drawn from the original sample of twenty seven schools and two additional schools to act as a control on the original control group. Two measures of student performance were utilized in the "bike-ed" trial, a riding knowledge questionnaire and a riding performance test. These two measures were repeated at the pre-test, post-test, and follow-up stages of the study. Students in the treatment groups showed a marginal improvement in their riding knowledge in the year since completion of the "bike-ed" course. These same students showed significant deterioration in performance from the post-test stage to the follow-up stage. There was, however, still a significant improvement at the follow-up stage when compared with the pre-test stage. The benefit students had received from participation in the "bike-ed" programmes was demonstrated by the superior scores these students attained in both tests when compared with the control group. After one year, there was no marked difference between students who had participated in the full "bike-ed" programmes and those in the abridged course (which excluded on-road riding and minimized the programme's bicycle maintenance content).
