LOAD CARRYING CAPACITY OF HIGHWAY BRIDGES

It is contended in this paper that most existing bridges possess substantial load carrying capacities above their original design strengths. These reserve strengths exist because of a variety of reasons such as: simplified methods of force analysis; variations between actual and design strength values of structural materials; inaccurate strength analyses; faulty basic assumptions; unaccounted component interaction; and above all using the same procedure for evaluation as that employed for the design of a structure. It is shown that the most essential tool for realistic bridge evaluation is a government backed code which would allow the evaluator to take advantage of measured values of load effects and strengths.
