OCEAN COMMERCE AND THE PANAMA CANAL
The construction of a sea-level interoceanic canal able to transit supercarriers could exert a multiplier effect on oceanborne commerce in coming decades, given the trend toward larger vessels that cannot now pass through the Panama Canal. However, the progressive growth of traffic that has occurred at the Canal over the past fifty years suggests that the expansion of trade through this artery is far from over.
