DESIGN AND MAINTENANCE OF RESIDENTIAL STREET PAVEMENTS

This paper describes the state of the art in the design and maintenance of residential streets and outlines steps taken by ARRB in a current study to close some of the more important gaps seen to exist. The study has concentrated on collecting test data from some fifty residential street sites around Australia. The analysis of this test data has reached an advanced stage and major preliminary findings from the study can now be published. These findings take the form of sets of "interim" curves relating: (i) design pavement thickness to traffic and subgrade CBR; and (ii) tolerable deflection to traffic. The paper presents these findings along with other data, all aimed at making the design and maintenance of residential street pavements a more precise art in the future. (Author/TRRL)
